Appropriate and Calibrated Portable gas detectors are a mandatory requirement in line with SOLAS regulation XI-1/7 for all applicable vessels. At Oceanlink, we provide gas detector calibration in compliance with SOLAS regulations.
All onboard Gas measuring equipment needs to be calibrated to ensure proper detection of the following:
- Flammable gases
- Hydrogen Sulphide
- Carbon monoxide
MSC.1/Circ.1477 states that “It should be noted that, given a ship’s specific characteristics and operations, additional atmospheric hazards in enclosed spaces may be present that may not be detected by the instrument recommended to be selected by these Guidelines, and in such cases, if known, additional appropriate instruments should be carried.”

Portable gas detector calibration
Calibration of a portable gas detector is a mandatory requirement as well, as prescribed by the manufacturer of the gas detector.
A calibrated gas detector will provide a precise and accurate reading of traces of toxic and undesired gases, and provide maximum safety to the user. If the detectors are not calibrated properly, the outcome can be very dangerous.
Gas detector calibration requirements
As per SOLAS XI-1/7 regulation, Portable gas detector has to be:
- Four gas detector
- 10 Hours of continuous operation
- IP67 Protection
- Capable of remote detection
2.5. It is recommended that each ship should also be provided with calibrated and tested multi-gas detectors suitable for measuring the level of oxygen, carbon monoxide and other gases as appropriate, during the entry, as per paragraph 8.2 and 9.3 of Resolution A.1050(27). These may be the same instrument(s) used prior to entry into the enclosed space (other than colorimetric tubes referred to in section 4) or maybe additional instruments.
All portable gas detectors available onboard need to be tested and calibrated as per manufacturer’s instructions to make sure that the devices perform satisfactorily and adhere to the requirements.
Gas detector calibration procedure
The calibration of gas detectors is done as per the instrument manufacturer’s instructions.
Where recommended by the manufacturer, span gas, containing the correct gas mix for the instrument(s), are carried on board for the purposes of “bump testing” of the instrument.
Gas detector calibration certificate
We offer on-site/onboard calibration service at your port of call and issue certificates onboard with 1 year of validity from the date of issue.
Gas detector calibration frequency or How often should multi-gas detectors be calibrated?
Portable and Fixed gas detectors used on commercial vessels need to be calibrated Annually / every 12 Months.
Xnx Honeywell gas detector calibration
We calibrate Xnx Honeywell gas detector as per the instrument manufacturer’s instructions.
